However cliche this may sound, today is new year's eve and i shall come up with a reflective entry. Actually this was a deal with goshiyu, so i shall just be a person of honor. Anyway, a few words abt the past week first. I have been having swimming sessions with shiyu for quite some time already. We went tanning at the pool today and i am fully convinced tt e weather in toa payoh is so much better than tt in woodlands. Whoops, my skin has reddened quite a bit, hope i wont peel. And, hottest news off FM987 live, 'Apologise' is the number 1 song for 2008!
Alright, off to the serious stuff. I wont have any new year resolution, cos tt is for naive people. Resolutions are destined to be left ignored and you realise this with experience. So if u still believe in angels, no one will blame u for thinking tt they will make ur wish come true. One day, u will outgrow this fantasy. No hurry really, kiddo.
2008 has been a year of many 'firsts' for me. A year when i 'pon' sch for the first time in my entire life, tt was someday before the eoys this yr. No one really believed me when i told them this, but my mum can vouch for me. Psychologically, i have skipped lessons for a zillions times already, just look at me during cme lessons. Physically, it was really a breakthrough, desperate times call for desperate measures. A year when we begged TanBH to let us turn on the radio for the olympic games update and when he refused, logged on to our handphones instead. Till today, i have felt no guilt for not paying attention to him talk abt SPA skills tt day. The Olympics is more impt than a made-up experiment, period.
2008, like any year before it, has had its ups and downs, and i have identified my 2 persons of the year from them: Michael Phelps and Barack Obama. No photos of them will be put up becos u can definitely summon their faces to ur mind.
The peak of 2008 has been the Beijing Olympics, surely everyone would agree with me on this. We saw Michael Phelps rise from the water as a man-fish, a human who conquered and struck gold 8 times. A guy who loved the water more than ur pet goldfish and more imptly, he showed by example tt miracles can be made possible by sheer grit, but of course a 2m arm span will definitely help. He stretched his potential, exceeded normal limits and he is certainly Phelps the Phenomenon.
During the worsening global economic recession in late 2008, Barack Obama has become an icon for hope. You see him everywhere u go, in the papers, on radio, on tv, thru the internet. A leader who refused public financing but depended on donations to fund his campaign, and had more money than any other candidate. A man who stuck to his slogan 'Change we can believe in' and made everyone believe in him, convinced that he will represent new voices and shape up a better world. Of course, everyone believed in Bush 8 yrs ago too but now no one does. We will leave it to time to prove if Obama is worthy of such trust we place in him right now but for lighting up our hopes in the current dire times, he deserved to be dubbed man of the year.
2008 will end on a low note, since we have not received celebratory news for the past few months, unless u take joy in knowing tt babies from single-child families die from poisoned milk and families are broken up due to the economic crisis. But if we see it in another way, this means tt perhaps things cant become worse than now and we will have a better year in 2009.
Let us not wish for a perfectly smooth-sailing year ahead, for tt is impossible and too unambitious. Instead, when the trails and tribulations do arrive, may us be granted the courage and attributes to overcome them, and then emerge stronger and wiser than before. Happy New Year.
